Copa Poland 1974

Kazimierz Gorski appointment as international manager in 1970 set in motion a chain of events that would lead to Poland excelling at the 1974 World Cup with what would be remembered as the greatest team in their history. Absent from the tournament through injury was the national teams legendary striker Wlodzimierz Lubanski, but the giant forward Andrzej Szarmach proved a capable replacement in tandem with the brilliant wingers Robert Gadocha and Grzegorz Lato; all aided by the vision and creativity in midfield of Kazimierz Deyna.

A win against West Germany in the second group stage would have seen the Poles through to the World Cup Final, but the torrential rain which made conditions difficult hindered their natural passing game and the Germans progressed. Poland took some consolation by defeating Brazil to secure an admirable third place overall.
