Sweden had long produced talented footballers but the strictly amateur nature of its game meant the best of them departed to earn a living abroad. A long-standing policy of refusing to select professional players meant the national team struggled to make much impact on the world game.

This rule was quietly dropped as everything possible was done to ensure Sweden performed well at the 1958 World Cup it was hosting. When the tournament squad was named it duly included five Italian based stars in Liedholm, Hamrin, Selmosson, Skoglund and Gustavsson.

The experienced foreign legion made a big impact, although arguably their best player was home-based centre forward Agne Simonsson who finished alongside Kurt Hamrin as his countrys joint top scorer. Sweden advanced all the way to the Final and the 5-2 defeat they suffered to a Pelé and Garrincha inspired Brazilian team was no disgrace in the circumstances.
