With the national team making the significant breakthrough of becoming European champions in 1964, hopes were high in Spain that the 1966 World Cup might also be a rewarding tournament for the national team. Qualification was the simplest of processes following Syria´s withdrawal and involved just three matches against the Republic of Ireland.

The Spanish squad that travelled to England looked strong with its big contingent from the newly crowned European champions Real Madrid; players of the quality of Manuel Sanchis, Zoco, Amancia, Gento and Pirri. The great Basque keeper Iribar brought certainty between the posts while there was plenty of experience and know-how from the squad´s Italian based trio - Luis Del Sol, Luis Suárez and Joaquin Peiró.

Drawn in a tough group, Spain never really sparked into life and all three of their games ended with similar 2-1 scorelines - a win over Switzerland but defeats to Argentina and West Germany. It was another disappointing World Cup for a Spanish team that again looked better on paper than it did on the field.
