A squad that still featured brilliant talents like Torres, Nene, Simoes and of course the incomparable Eusébio achieved minor acclaim in 1972 with success in that summer´s Independence Cup.
All five of their fixtures were won with Chile and Argentina among the opponents comfortably defeated during this friendly tournament. This success was really little more than a consolation prize however following failure to qualify for the final stages of the European Championship being played that same summer.
A defeat to Scotland in the qualifiers had left them needing to beat group leaders Belgium handsomely in the last game, but a 1-1 draw meant they spent yet another major tournament on the sidelines.
