In defence Bossis and Tresor were mobile and powerful stoppers; Fernandez, Tigana and Giresse brought a range of midfield talents that complemented perfectly the gifted playmaker Platini while Rocheteau up front boasted sharp finishing to go with his clever movement.

France participated at the 1978 World Cup although it would be the following decade when that gifted group of players hit its peak and the world saw French football at its best.
