That China came very close to qualification for the 1982 World Cup was quite a surprise for two reasons. Firstly, China had spent most of the 1960s and 1970s in sporting isolation and this was only the second time the nation had even entered a World Cup qualification campaign.

Secondly, standards were not high in part because of that isolation and in part because of a lack of focus on the sport. Some reasonable players like striker Zhao Dayu and full back Zhu Bo would emerge during the 80s, but neither played a part in those 1982 qualifiers.

Ultimately New Zealand defeated China in a play-off and travelled to Spain with Kuwait as representatives of the Asian & Oceanic group. Closer to home Chinas 1982 Asian Cup campaign was ended at the Quarter Final stage by neighbours North Korea.
