Cameroon´s achievement at becoming one of the two African representatives at the 1982 World Cup was all the more remarkable considering this was the first time the Indomitable Lions had even tried to qualify for the tournament. The national team had either not entered at all in the past or, in 1966, withdrawn when the series was already underway.

And when they reached Spain the Cameroonian team acquitted itself very well under French coach Jean Vincent. The legendary Thomas N´Kono and Roger Milla were part of the team that was eliminated at the group stage, despite being unbeaten following three drawn games. Gregoire Mbida became Cameroon´s first World Cup scorer when he netted the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with eventual winners Italy.
