While Aberdeen had been impressing neutrals with the quality of their football for much of the 1970s, for reasons that were hard to pinpoint the club tended to fall just short when it came to winning silverware. When the League Cup was won during the 1976-77 season it was Aberdeens first trophy since the 1970 Scottish Cup, and a first success for manager Ally MacLeod in what would be his last campaign before taking over the Scotland managers job.Winning this particular competition was never easy in part because of the sheer number of fixtures a team had to get through - Aberdeen played ten in all. Curiously the Dons toughest challenge came from Stirling Albion in the Quarter Finals with a replay needed to progress after their tie finished 1-1 on aggregate. By comparison Aberdeens matches against the Old Firm were straightforward affairs: Rangers were crushed 5-1 in the semi-final and Celtic defeated 2-1 in the Final with goals from Drew Jarvie and Davie Robb.
