The European international scene saw considerable change in 1960 with the inception of the European Nations Cup. In common with half of the continent the Dutch were slow to come round to the idea of this new competition and chose not to be involved. Their year instead was dedicated to international friendlies.

With the veteran Faas Wilkes still leading the forward line, highlights included a 4-2 win over Bulgaria and a 4-1 win away to eternal rivals Belgium. The low point of the year came with a crushing 4-0 defeat to the very same Soviet Union team that had become the first winners of that European Nations Cup just a few months earlier.
