Copa Suéter Finland 1975 Pullover

The football world was still waiting for Finnish football to make some impression on it when the 1970s got underway. The sum total of the national team´s achievements at that point were a couple of unofficial Nordic championships in 1964 and 1966, while a first win in a qualifying tie for a major tournament was still some eight years away.

The qualification campaign for the 1972 European Nations Cup was typical of Finland´s fortunes at the time. Some slight promise came with a 1-1 draw in their opening game at Czechoslovakia, but that goal by Matti Paatelainen was the only one the Finns would score in the series. The other five ties against Romania, Wales and the return at home to the Czechs were all lost leaving Finland marooned in the traditional position of bottom of their group.
