Olympic champions in 1952, destroyer of England in 1953 both home and away and unbeaten in 31 internationals going back four years by the start of the 1954 World Cup; victory in the tournament for Hungary was seen as inevitable. Against all odds they controversially lost in the Final to a West German team they had crushed earlier in the same tournament.

The 1956 uprising against the Soviet-backed government meant a defence of their Olympic title was impossible and their 1958 World Cup hopes were weakened by their top stars escaping to the west, then ended after a play-off against Wales.
