The Greek national team began the decade promisingly in narrowly missing out on qualification for the 1970 World Cup, then ended the 70s by actually qualifying for the 1980 Nations Cup. A core of long-serving and often-capped players had key roles in both these campaigns. No player showed greater longevity than the attacking midfielder Dimitrios Domazos who made his international debut in 1959 and was still representing his country as late as 1980. Forwards Giorgos Koudas and Thomas Mavros played throughout the 70s too as did keeper Vasilis Konstantinou and the uncompromising captain and sweeper, Anthimos Kapsis.Towards the end of the decade probably the best striker Greek football has produced - Nikos Anastopoulos - emerged onto the scene and quickly became an indispensable member of that breakthrough Euro 80 squad.
