After the off-field problems that had surrounded the club in the previous decade, the 1970s saw Cercle promoted back to Belgiums top flight in 1971 and attempt to establish themselves as competitive among the big boys once again.Under Dutch coach Johan Grijzenhout the club assembled an interesting side over the next few seasons. Established players like striker Franky Vanhaecke and long-serving deep-lying midfielder Jules Verriest were joined by the veteran striker Fernand Goyvaerts who had played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid in the 60s.
