The decade in which Cameroonian football emerged from the shadows onto the world stage with a bang. With their first serious qualifying attempt the Indomitable Lions reached the 1982 World Cup and Jean Vincent´s team was unlucky to exit at the group stage after all three fictures were drawn.

Two years later Cameroon qualified for the 1984 African Cup of Nations, progressed through the tournament to meet Algeria in the semi-final and won the tie on penalty kicks. In the final itself, Cameroon overcame Nigeria 3?1 with goals from Rene NDjeya, Theophile Abega and Ernest Ebongue to become continental champions for the first time.

At the next tournament two years later Cameroon finished runners up to hosts Egypt, but retook their title in 1988 with another victory over Nigeria. Their stars of that tournament included keeper Joseph-Antoine Bell, defenders Emmanuel Kundé and Stephen Tataw, midfielders Emile Mbouh and Paul Mfede as well as the evergreen Roger Milla in attack. This was the basis of the squad that would make such a huge impression on the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
