Cameroon stepped onto the world stage for the first time at the 1982 World Cup and this was a natural consequence of the positive developments in the national team over the previous decade - especially its first half.

1970 saw Cameroon participate in the African Nations Cup for the first time and although their campaign stalled at the group stage, two years later the Indomitable Lions would be back to make more of an impression on the next tournament. A run to the semi-finals paired them with Congo and a 1-0 loss meant they missed out on the Final. A 5-2 win over Zaire brought the consolation of third place.

The France based striker Joseph Yegba Maya was their most influential international of the early 70s and he played alongside the youngster Francois NDoumbe, a player who would still be an important part of the national scene by the time of that first World Cup appearance in 1982.
